NetChat is a small and fast personal communication tool for OS/2 and Win95. It is designed to hook two people up directly (without using the IRC channels, servers, IP servers, etc.) for a ONE-ON-ONE personal direct text chat.
One button Hailing makes it a simple and painless way to connect.
NetChat for OS/2 utilizes a "Hailing feature" to accomplish this. The hailing feature uses a built in seamless e-mail facility to send your current IP address to another NetChat user in a specially coded e-mail letter.
OS/2 3.x or 4.x required with TCP/IP installed (or the light version in the Warp 3.x iak). An internet connection with an e-mail account is also required.
The Win95 version, of course, requires having Win95 installed with TCP/IP and an internet connection with an e-mail account.
No other servers, e-mail or support software are needed.

TrueSpectra Releases New Version of Best-Selling Photo>Graphics for OS/2
Toronto, Canada - TrueSpectra Inc. today announced an enhanced version of their best-selling Photo>Graphics for OS/2, a highly advanced and innovative graphics creation and editing application. The release of Photo>Graphics PRO for OS/2 V2.0 features many important new features, using an innovative object based design for advanced integration of photographic images, user draw and text layout.
Following on the successes of the critically acclaimed Photo>Graphics for OS/2, Photo>Graphics PRO V2.0 builds upon the original creative design with extensive support for additional graphic file formats, TWAIN for OS/2 scanner device drivers and optimized Postscript printing. Included are new features for automation via the OS/2 REXX language, new drawing tools, additional image effects, and even greater support for creation of Web based graphics. The package also contains a royalty-free Image and Clipart library and a 5-user license copy of the product built using IBM's OpenDoc component technology.
Since the original version release in mid-1996, Photo>Graphics has been a Top 10 selling application with exceptional customer reviews extoling the simplicity with which professional quality graphics are created. The release of PRO has generated tremendous amounts of excitement, with orders already pouring in.
Photo>Graphics PRO is built upon TrueSpectra's patent-pending ColorWave Graphics Engine which integrates resolution independent graphic objects with a highly efficient, real-time rendering engine. The result is the ability to create fully scalable professional graphics on existing hardware. Versions of the ColorWave engine and the Photo>Graphics application are preparing for release on other platforms including Windows 95 and Windows NT, Macintosh, and multiple UNIX variants.
Photo>Graphics PRO v2.0 requires a PC running OS/2 Warp 3.0 or later with a 486/66MHz or higher processor, 8MB RAM, and at least 256 color video support (64,000 colors or higher is recommended).
Photo>Graphics PRO v2.0 has a suggested retail price of US $249.95, and is available through retail channels in North America, Europe and Australia. Registered owners of previous Photo>Graphics versions can upgrade for $99.95 until August 31st, 1997.

Based on monthly statistics collected recently, the following are the most visited web pages at IBM:
1. Most popular web page in the entire "ibm.com" domain: Netscape for OS/2 Warp download page at http://www.internet.ibm.com/browsers/netscape/warp.
2. Most popular web page in the "software.ibm.com" domain: OS/2 Warp family pages, at http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp (including OS/2 Warp Server link at http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp-server).
Also, the OS/2 Warp Device Driver Pack (hosted by service.software.ibm.com) came in at Number 4 overall.
(Monthly statistics tend to exclude short term "spikes" which might be associated with special events or promotions, better reflecting web usage which is both steady and high.)
Clearly OS/2 Warp users represent one of the most Internet-savvy populations in the world. That shouldn't be surprising, since OS/2 Warp Version 3 (1994) was the first commercial PC operating system with comprehensive Internet access built-in, and OS/2 Warp Version 4 is the first commercial PC operating system with built-in Java.
To continue that leadership, IBM plans several major enhancements later this year. Netscape will be releasing Netscape Communicator Version 4 for OS/2 Warp. Also, IBM introduces a new Java and web-managed version of TCP/IP for OS/2 Warp and OS/2 Warp Server (the first of its kind in the industry), incorporating the latest protocol improvements (such as preallocation of bandwidth). And IBM will release product codename "Bluebird," taking the headache out of managing PC applications, bringing the benefits of network computing (including Java) to X86 systems. But that's only the beginning...
Thank you, OS/2 Warp users!

PKWARE ships new version of PKZIP(R) for OS/2.
Brown Deer, WI - PKWARE, Inc., today announces a new OS/2 version of its world famous archiving and compression utility, PKZIP(R). The robust and flexible command-line 2.50 version starts shipping today. PKZIP runs as an Intel x86 32-bit native application under OS/2 2.0 or later. The ability to run as an efficient OS/2 native application is a big advantage over running in compatibility mode on other operating systems.
Important features of PKZIP 2.50 for OS/2 include the ability to:
* Compress or extract .ZIP files by using the popular 2.04g compression
method.
* Retain and restore extended attribute information.
* Retain and restore OS/2 HPFS Long File Names.
* Create self-extracting OS/2, Windows and DOS archives using the registered
version of PKZIP. Easy to use self-extracting files do not require PKZIP to
extract files from an archive.
* Create spanned .ZIP archives. A spanned .ZIP archive exists over more than
one diskette or other removable media.
* Allow self-extracting Windows and OS/2 archives to span multiple diskettes.
* Utilize a new command set which will make it easier for new users to
understand, and for experienced users to customize, through the use of more
configurable parameters.
* Recognize .ZIP archives imbedded with Authenticity Verification by
PKZIP for DOS v2.04g.
* Easily configure PKZIP's command-line interface to meet individual needs.
* Compress, extract, fix corrupt .ZIP files, and create self-extracting files
all using the same executable. A separate executable is not needed for each
different operation.
* View files from within an archive without extracting individual files.
A Distribution Licensed version of PKZIP 2.50 for OS/2 is also available.
The licensed version is for those who wish to facilitate the distribution of software or data to outside parties. This version includes access to an external data file containing additional self-extractor types for other operating systems and hardware platforms.
Those who register PKZIP 2.50 for OS/2 will receive the fast, file finding utility PKZFIND as an added bonus. This program is a file finding utility with an important plus. PKZFIND not only searches all directories on diskettes, local or network hard drives, or other media, but also will search through .ZIP files created by PKZIP. PKZFIND's flexible command-line interface will automatically switch to the sub-directory where the desired file is located. PKZFIND allows you to find any file, ZIPPED or not, simply and easily.
PKZIP has separate versions available for DOS, OpenVMS Alpha and VAX, and Windows 3.1x, Windows 95 and Windows NT. Native 32-bit versions of PKZIP are also available for Alpha or PowerPC systems running Windows NT.
Pricing and Availability
PKZIP 2.50 for OS/2 is available immediately for $47. You may order directly from PKWARE by calling (414)354-8699.

Red Storm and IBM Team Up On Java Games.
Companies Cooperate to Enable New Levels of Response, Reliability
CARY, N.C., June 11, 1997 . . . Red Storm Entertainment, Inc. and IBM today announced a technology development agreement that the companies expect will enable significant breakthroughs in the performance of online gaming applications over the Internet.
Under the terms of the agreement, Red Storm will use IBM Java**-based software technology, code named InVerse, in the development of future collaborative games for the Internet. Red Storm will help IBM evolve the InVerse technology for use in Web applications that require large-scale, real-time collaboration.
The first Red Storm game to use this technology, Tom Clancy's POLITIKA, will preview at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Atlanta June 19 -21 and is planned to ship this fall. The InVerse technology is ideally suited to gaming applications as it can host a variety of interactive, multi-user Web sites -- from simple chat rooms to elaborate virtual communities.
InVerse fosters collaboration over the Internet by providing a versatile communications interface that can adapt to many styles of applications while dynamically coping with the complexities of the Internet.
Doug Littlejohns, president and chief executive officer of Red Storm Entertainment, said, "Red Storm's strategy is to develop products that raise game-playing to a level never possible before, where literally thousands of people anywhere can game-play together and build their own stories and outcomes. We made a thorough search for the technology that would help Red Storm achieve our ambitious goal of breaking the mold in online game-playing. As a proven technology leader, IBM is an ideal partner to help us address critical issues of Internet response time and reliability."
Richard Redpath, Red Storm project manager and senior architect for IBM, said,"
Red Storm is on the cutting-edge of developing products that enable fully
dependable, real-time, massive collaboration on the Internet. While this joint
project focuses on delivering a highly reliable, interactive solution for
online game-playing, the technology it uses is also well suited to support the
needs of banks, insurance companies, universities and other customers seeking
to deploy multi-user interactive applications on the Web."
