BackTalk 1.2 OS/2 System Speech.
BackTalk enables your system to speak back to you. It uses RSynth 2.x to speak phrases and sentences, and uses REXX to queue requests. You can make speak any of your REXX programs, or programs that can execute other programs by themselves.
It comes with some already made REXX scripts:
- SPKMAIL speaks to you your new mail subject: and from: line. It has been tested with PMMail and MR/2 ICE, but it can work on any mailer that lets you execute REXX scripts when receiving new mail.
- SPCHTIME tells you the time at a defined lap, using civil (am, pm) or international (24 hours) time.
- SPCHTMR is a timer which allows to define a message, and the lap between each spoken time left and message. Also has an "urgent mode" which gets activated when the given time left (if >0) has passed, and it has its own message and lap of time too. It finally speaks a defineable alert message when the countdown has ended.
- SPKSTATS speaks the output of uptime.exe which contains the uptime of your system, the number of processes and threads.
All of these functions are easily accessible from a folder which is created on installation.
Available in incoming directories of Hobbes and Walnut FTP.
It may have been move to /mmedia directories of Hobbes and Walnut FTP
Note: needs EMX runtime and Info-ZIP UnZip 5.12 or greater.

ColorWorks V2 Upgrade.
Hello to Our ColorWorks Users,
If you are running ColorWorks V2 or V1+ under Warp 4.0 (Merlin) you should download and apply the Warp 4.0 program patches we have made available from the SPG Web-Site. The ColorWorks programs need these patches applied in order for them to operate properly under Warp 4.0.
The SPG Web-Site is located at http://www.spg-net.com/.
NOTE: If you are not running ColorWorks under Warp 4.0, meaning you are using Warp 3.0 or lower, the application of these patches to your ColorWorks doesn't hurt anything -- but they are not necessary.

The OS/2 Marketplace Conference.
March 14 - 16, 1997 -- Holiday Inn Old Town -- Scottsdale, Arizona
The OS/2 Marketplace: Getting down to business is a conference geared to businesses developing software for the OS/2 community. It's not a technical conference -- others handle that role quite well. Rather, The OS/2 Marketplace will focus on the business aspects of marketing software to OS/2 users: how to make your OS/2-based business a success.
Each presentation -- actually, the entire conference -- is designed with the pragmatic issues of OS/2 software vendors in mind. No expensive resort, no flashy stage shows. The conference is held over a weekend, to minimize your time away from the office.
Take the opportunity to learn software business essentials from people who are experts in their field. Learn from your peers what works and what doesn't work in the OS/2 marketplace -- which, as you probably know by now, is not an accurate reflection of the rest of the computer software industry.
Here's some of the presentations you can expect to see at the conference:
The OS/2 Marketplace: Getting down to business is co-sponsored by the Phoenix OS/2 Society and Indelible Blue, Inc -- both committed to the success of OS/2 vendors. All work is accomplished by volunteers. No IBM employees were harmed in the production of this conference. (In fact, this event is wholly an independent function, with no official IBM patronage.)
The conference will begin at 1 PM on Friday, March 14, 1997 and run through the afternoon on Sunday, March 16. You're also welcome to join the Phoenix OS/2 Society that evening, for its general meeting, when John W. Thompson will be the speaker.
Hotel: A block of rooms has been reserved at the Holiday Inn in Old Town Scottsdale, the conference site, for $140/night. Call 800- 695-6995 (602-994-9203, fax 602-941-2567) to reserve rooms, and mention the conference.
Scottsdale Arizona is a small city next door to Phoenix, with an emphasis on resort living. More than ten million people visit the Valley of the Sun each year, drawn in large part by its delightful weather. During the conference, you can expect temperatures to average about 72 degrees. The climate is perfect for a spectacular horseback ride in the Sonoran Desert or a weekend of shopping. The Holiday Inn Old Town is located in downtown Scottsdale, fifteen minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport; you won't need a car unless you plan individual excursions.
You can find a complete registration form on the Phoenix OS/2 Society's web site, (or request one from the conference coordinator, Rosey Rosenwald, at robert@perfectniche.com).

HTMLview 1.0 FOR OS/2 Available.
Today, to celebrate the birthday of its founder and chief programmer JMA Software Technologies started to ship HTMLview 1.0. HTMLview is a Internet web browser and HTML viewer built to be compact and easy to use.
Features include offline and online browsing, downloads, select a new link while a document is loading, easy to use QuickList and others.
HTMLview is also available in customized versions. If your company has need for a specialized and/or featured restricted web browser please contact us for more information.
But what about WebExplorer and Netscape Navigator?
HTMLview is not built to be the all in one Internet application. WebExplorer and Navigator both tries to incorporate as much as possible but we found out - asking our beta testers - that most users prefer separate mail and news clients. Therefore HTMLview is built to contain the browser part and be a quick an compact browser.
HTMLview is quite similar to WebExplorer. They both use the same API and share many features. WebExplorer has not changed much the last year and IBM has publicly stated that WebExplorer will not be enhanced.
Netscape Navigator is a full featured browser and mail/news client. HTMLview is not built to compete with that. On the other hand the current Navigator for OS/2 is a two megabyte monster while HTMLview is < 100 KB. Many of our testers use both browsers.
But the most compelling reason for HTMLview is that you can influence the features. Try calling IBM or Netscape and ask for a specific feature, our browser (HTMLview) is built on what our testers asked for.
HTMLview 1.0 ships as Trial and Registered Editions. The Registered Edition lists for USD $25. The Trial Edition is a free trial version that might be evaluated in 30 days. The Trial Edition has a timeout and has limitations on its features. Any use after the trial period requires you to register. Unregistered use after the evaluation period is illegal.
The Trial Edition is available for download from our world wide web site and from several public ftp sites.
For site licenses please contact us via internet mail.
JMA Software Technologies offers maintenance and support services for all its products. For information on maintenance and support services visit our world wide web site.
HTMLview can be purchased through BMT Micro.
