January 28, 1997 Announcements

New Shareware Text/Hex-Editor for OS/2.

Kon is an all-around editor, with functions that can make it a much more versatile replacement for E.EXE, and functions that make it appealing also for the technical user, like built-in Hexeditor, absolute control of the file you're editing (without being to technical), and syntax highlighting.

Kon is highly configurable, and designed to appeal to all kinds of users. Keyboard, syntax-highlighting, display, window position save options, block marking behaviour can all be configured to the users' liking, either from a text-file (Keyboard, syn.hl), or from the settings notebook.

Kon is also very small, and does not consist of many files.

The file can be found on the Kon homepage (always latest version), Hobbes and Soft-Touch's Must-have utilites home page.

IBM and OS/2 Committment.

4:30 p.m. EST Fri., Nov. 22, 1996 (reprinted from http://www.techweb.com/cgi-bin/ad-client.pl).

After getting a personal commitment from IBM Chairman Louis Gerstner that OS/2 will be alive and well, executives responsible for development and marketing of the PC operating system said it will undergo a major upgrade by early 1998.

Donn Atkins, vice president of marketing for IBM's Personal Software Products unit, said he and John W. Thompson, general manager of the unit, received Gerstner's thumbs-up on the product earlier this year.

But Atkins said Gerstner told him and Thompson that the computer giant needed to refocus OS/2 into a clearer network computing model, and that changes in development and marketing teams around the operating system followed suit.

Atkins tried to quash the notion in some sectors that OS/2 has seen its last major upgrade, which was code named "Merlin" and released earlier this year.

"We'll do the mega release," Atkins said. "Early 1998, we'll do the next major version."

But he said that, unlike past product upgrade cycles, IBM will make stand-alone, upgraded functions of the operating system available for download on a periodic basis between now and the next release.

"There will be changes to the kernel where changes are required," Atkins said.

Atkins said IBM is aiming to better satisfy the OS/2 user community--one that spends upwards of $20 billion each year on IBM computer products.

The computer giant's three-phase strategy for OS/2--of which the first phase has been completed--calls for a move to transform the product to include universal access to any application over the World Wide Web and open Java tools, partners and services to be included with it.

After that, the company intends to "exploit network computing" by providing "platform-neutral applications" and central control for security and service, according to a product strategy briefing put out by Atkins' organization.

That briefing also calls for increased network computing functionality in OS/2 through TCP/IP improvements, browser administration, a firewall/proxy server, net computing protocols and a third tier of database/transaction servers to be included in the product in 1997 and 1998.

Additionally, Atkins said Netscape Communications Corp., Mountain View, Calif., and IBM, which now offer Netscape's Navigator 2.0 version for OS/2, will not offer a version 3.0 of the browser, but instead will skip right into development of Netscape's next generation of the software, Galileo. The OS/2 version of that, IBM officials said, may be available within a couple of months of Netscape's release of Galileo for Microsoft Corp.'s Windows platform.

Register BMT Micro Shareware on the OS/2 Supersite.

BMT Micro, Inc. in cooperation with the OS/2 Supersite has announced that every OS/2 shareware program available from BMT Micro can now be registered online at the OS/2 Supersite. Programs ordered via the Supersite are handled by a secure server.

The OS/2 Supersite contains a Web-based mirror of the HOBBES (hobbes.nmsu.edu) OS/2 shareware and freeware archive. At the moment it is a partial mirror, but recently acquired hardware support will enable us to expand to a full mirror shortly. Other features will be added to the Supersite in the coming weeks. The OS/2 Supersite is at http://www.os2ss.com/.

The OS/2 Supersite is not simply a collection of files with links to HOBBES - it is an actual mirror with a high speed connection to the internet and more often than not offers a faster connection than HOBBES during peak periods.

"We believe that by making the approximately 200 OS/2 shareware programs available through BMT Micro on the OS/2 Supersite is a logical extension of our core business." says Thomas Bradford, president of BMT Micro. "The OS/2 Supersite is definitely the hottest new OS/2 development for the Internet that has came onto the scene in recent history."

Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2 v1.0 Available.

Version 1.00 of Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2 (WPAMPTR) is now available.

"Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" is a FREEWARE WPS integrated SOM enhancement class for the mouse object. With this program you can animate all of the OS/2 mouse pointers.

The following animation resource types are supported:

"Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" also includes a creation program for AniMouse resource DLL files. More, "Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" introduces the "Static Pointer" feature (even within AniMouse resource DLL files).

"Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" replaces the Pointers page in the Mouse object so you can configure all the animations simply by modifying the settings of the Mouse object, as you are already used to do. Use the advanced Drag&Drop functionality provided by "Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" to drag all the supported resource files directly over the container or over one of its items (mouse pointers) to simply change the animation for all or only for one of the mouse pointers.

Further, Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2 introduces some new Mouse object settings strings so that you can setup all animation settings via the REXX API call SysSetObjectData().

And you get that all for FREE.

You can download "Animated Mouse Pointer for OS/2" via FTP from hobbes.nmsu.edu. Look for:

     ftp://hobbes.nmsu.edu/incoming/amptr100.zip      (currently)

New Version of Source Mapper Released.

A new version of Source Mapper for OS/2 and DOS is available for download from "http://home.sn.no/~leilarse/" now as FREEWARE :-)

Source Mapper has now turned to be freeware! There are several reasons for this. The first I would like to mention is the fact that no one has registered it! So you people hopefully get what you want, - FREEWARE! The other reason is that I've bought IBM Visual Age C++ v.3.0 for OS/2. And guess what! - I am really impressed about this product. It has built in support for most of the things that Source Mapper can do, plus a lot more...

With SM you can make a useful (human readable) map of your C-style source codes. You can generate a map of a single sourcefile, or you can have SM generate a map of a huge project that consists of many source files.

The map is especially useful when you need to document the source(s) of your project. I've also found it helpful when digging into sources written by others.

Feel free to give me any suggestions or comments. I will be happy to hear what you think about SM, either you like it or not.

SM has been successfully compiled by the following compilers.

OS/2 : IBM Visual Age C++ v.3.0, and Borland C++ v.2.0 for OS/2.
DOS : Borland C++ v.3.1 for DOS.
WIN32 : Borland C++ v.4.52 for Windows.
DOS386: GNU C-Compiler v.2.6.3 for DOS (DJGPP).
UNIX : GNU C-Compiler v.2.6.3
