Oracle Front-Office Suite for Network Computers.

At Oracle OpenWorld '96 today, Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL) announced three productivity applets that will run on network computers; a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation graphics, code-named "HatTrick," that have been incorporated into InterOffice, Oracle's Web-based collaboration software. An industry first, these new features allow users to create, e-mail and receive formatted documents without launching separate applications or attaching files -- it's all one application. InterOffice 4.0 is currently shipping.

HatTrick was developed completely in Java and publishes natively in HTML. Graphically enhanced documents created with HatTrick can be viewed by any Web browser. As a result, users do not have to worry about software incompatibility when moving between computing platforms. In addition, HatTrick applets are more user-friendly and easier to learn than traditional front-office applications because the applets work together interchangeably. InterOffice with HatTrick focuses on the tasks that users perform most frequently, eliminating resource-consuming functions found, but hardly ever used, in most software productivity suites.

Unlike bulky front office product suites, InterOffice with HatTrick gives users software product suite functionality without demanding suite memory. The HatTrick applets require less than 2 megabytes of memory and no client disk space. They run from within InterOffice's messaging interface, meaning users need not open multiple applications to access word processors, presentation functionality or spreadsheets. To achieve the same basic level of functionality, Microsoft Office requires users to provide a minimum of 12 megabytes of memory and 89 megabytes of client disk space, while launching three separate applications.

A Component of Oracle's Network Computing Architecture InterOffice with HatTrick is an important component of Oracle's recently announced Network Computing Architecture, a common set of technologies that allow all PCs, network computers and other clients to work with all Web servers, database servers and application servers over any network. A key component of Network Computing Architecture is the cartridge, a highly manageable software component that can reside on the client, the application server or the database. InterOffice's HatTrick applets operate as cartridges which reside on the application server.

InterOffice, the world's first scalable Web-based collaboration software, can scale from workgroup to enterprise, connecting users across corporate intranets and public networks. Built from the ground up using open Internet standards and Web interfaces, Oracle InterOffice provides corporate intranets with e-mail, scheduling, workflow and document management services that improve collaboration across the enterprise and increase user productivity.

Oracle InterOffice version 4.0 is currently shipping. Oracle InterOffice messaging server and document management server are available as options in the Oracle(R) Universal Server(R) family of products.

HatTrick word processor and presentation graphics applets is scheduled to ship with InterOffice 4.1 in Q1'97. The spreadsheet applet is scheduled for availability in Q2'97. Pricing will be announced when the product is released.

IBM, Sun Expand Relationship to Deliver Java Solutions.

IBM to License JavaOS and HotJava.

IBM and Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s JavaSoft business unit today announced an expanded relationship for delivering Java** technology for business users and support programs for software developers. These initiatives will help extend the value of Java to enterprises that are increasingly adopting it as a core part of their Internet and network computing strategies.

Today's announcements add to the momentum that is rapidly building around Java. Developed by Sun Microsystems, Inc., the Java platform holds tremendous appeal to developers who see it as an efficient and cost-effective technology for network-enabling their business applications.

Specifics of this enhanced collaboration are:

JavaOS, Hot Java Licensing JavaOS, developed by Sun, is a highly compact operating system, designed to run Java applications directly on microprocessors in anything from net computers to cell phones. A dynamically extensible operating environment, JavaOS brings the design advantages of the Java platform to an operating system.

As part of its ongoing network computing strategy, IBM intends to offer JavaOS as an option for future network computers.

HotJava is a set of building blocks for building network-aware applications. Using these building blocks, a developer can write a modifiable, extensible user environment -- a personalized workspace for accessing Java applets and applications. IBM is evaluating HotJava for use in future offerings.

Java Validation Centers
IBM is expanding the services available at its U.S. porting facilities, called Solution Partnership Centers, to include Java validation. IBM will offer access to IBM and other systems to which the Java Virtual Machine** has been ported to help independent solution providers test their applications. The systems can be accessed either on-site at the two centers or remotely through the Internet with firewall protection at no charge to developers.

To contact the Solution Partnership Centers, developers in the U.S. can call 800-678-4249. The direct number for the San Mateo facility is (415)-312-0240, and for the Waltham facility, (617) 895-2610. Inquiries can also be sent to the following e-mail ID: spcw@spc.ibm.com For more information, visit the following Web site, http://www.spc.ibm.com.

Further information on IBM's Java activities can be found in an IBM Java Fact Sheet available on IBM's Web site or from Technology Solutions Public Relations firm, (212) 696-2000, ext. 308.

Lotus Extends the Power of Domino to Java Developers.

At the Domino Web Developers' Conference held here, Lotus Development Corp. today announced a series of initiatives to open and extend the world's leading groupware application development platform for intranets, Lotus Domino, through Java, the leading application development language for the World Wide Web. These initiatives will range from enabling the execution of Java applets in Domino 4.5, to full support of Java in Lotus APIs and Java Beans in Domino 5.0 servers and Notes 5.0 clients. By combining the powerful Web application development capabilities of Domino and Java, Lotus is providing the rapidly growing community of Web developers a new opportunity to create rich, interactive, collaborative business applications that can be deployed across intranets and the Internet.

With Release 4.5, available by the end of 1996, Notes clients will support Java applet execution, and Domino servers will serve pages that include Java applets and Internet scripting languages such as VBScript or JavaScript. This support will enable developers to deliver Java-based solutions to Notes and Web browser users through the Domino platform.

Future Development
Beyond Domino 4.5, Lotus further announced plans to provide support for Java classes via Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP) to access Domino application services. This will allow developers to create Java-based applications that access the rich Domino services via open standards. This will make Domino's object store, security, messaging, and other application services available to Java applications. With the added value of Domino's services, time from development to deployment decreases, and ongoing maintenance costs are greatly reduced.

In addition, Lotus announced plans to make the Domino user experience consistent for those using Notes clients or Web browsers. To achieve this consistency, Lotus will deliver Java applets that enable the browser to render rich Notes user interface functionality, such as sophisticated views and graphical form layout regions. Lotus will also provide development tools that allow developers to author Java agents and Java-based client applications within the Notes development environment. This will allow developers to easily develop rich applications that can be deployed across mixed client environments.

Lotus Domino provides an ideal communications infrastructure by tightly integrating the robust functionality of enterprise-ready, client/server messaging and groupware with the open standards and global reach of the World Wide Web. Domino creates the most complete platform for rapidly developing and deploying strategic business applications. In addition, Domino enables individuals and organizations to communicate with colleagues, collaborate in teams, and coordinate business processes within and beyond their organizational boundaries to achieve a competitive edge.

All Lotus news releases are available on the Internet, via the Lotus Development Corp. Home Page at http://www.Lotus.com. This release can also be found at http://domino.lotus.com. The Lotus Home Page is an easy way to find information about Lotus and its business partners' products and services.
