IBM to attend Warpstock '97.

IBM presents long term OS/2(tm) Strategy to OS/2 Faithful Oklahoma City, August 1, 1997 -- After a meeting with key members of the OS/2 Warpstock committee last week, representatives of the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) agreed to present their long term strategy for OS/2 at the 1997 OS/2 Warpstock convention. Commonly known as Warpstock '97, the inaugural event will be held October 25-26, 1997, in Diamond Bar, California. James Koerner, manager of IBM's Personal Software Products division, will be on hand to address the audience and discuss the OS/2 Warp strategy, how customers can take advantage of Warp to move quickly to network computing, and why that is good for business.

"I'm pleased to have this opportunity to discuss our direction with this group. I am looking forward to speaking on OS/2 Warp's strength as an outstanding 100% pure Java development and deployment environment, Warp Server's role as a premier internet server, and how Project Bluebird will put our customers on the road to network computing," said Koerner.

On the show room floor, IBM representatives will demonstrate the latest developments of Bluebird, code name for the upcoming operating system solution that is targeted toward the emerging managed PC environment. Bluebird is intended to help customers start the transition of the OS/2 Warp family of products to network computing while still protecting their investments. An off-floor discussion will also be provided to discuss the positioning of Project Bluebird.

Warpstock '97 focuses on a segment of the computing market considered essential to the long term health of OS/2 - the burgeoning small office/home office (SOHO). "This market is growing faster than any other segment, and it is more receptive to a marketing message which emphasizes the benefits of OS/2 - true preemptive multitasking, application crash protection, and rock solid system operation", Koerner added.

Warpstock 97, a major conference for OS/2 small office/home office (SOHO) and individual end-users, is an excellent forum for IBM, OS/2 SOHO and individual users, and OS/2 independent software vendors to align with this market segment's product requirements and to exchange ideas. The idea of an "OS/2 love-fest" was conceived as one result of The OS/2 Marketplace, a highly successful OS/2 vendors conference sponsored by the Phoenix OS/2 Society (POSSI).

Discussion about the event is ongoing on the internet's comp.os.os2.misc newsgroup, on commerical on-line services, and with centralized discussion on an Internet maillist. For more information, visit http://www.warpstock.org and join the Warpstock listserv. To subscribe to the Warpstock listserv, send an email to warpstock-request@warpstock.org with no subject and the words "subscribe" in the message body.

Further announcements about Warpstock will be forthcoming as planning for the event continues. Warpstock '97 is an ALL-VOLUNTEER effort; anyone committed to promoting OS/2 is invited to sign up and volunteer their time and skills to make Warpstock '97 a success. Volunteers should join the listserv to obtain information on available slots.

OS/2 BBS New Phone Number.

Oakton, Virginia, August 4, 1997: After seven years and well over a million calls, the OS/2 Shareware BBS has moved from Fairfax, Virginia to Oakton, Virginia. As luck would have it, even though the move was only 2.5 miles away we had to change phone numbers. Effective immediately, the new phone number for the OS/2 Shareware BBS is:

703-242-4482

This one number is used for both subscribers and non-subscribers alike. Even if you don't plan to call the BBS soon, please check your dialing directory and anywhere else you store phone numbers and make sure that you record the new number overtop of the old one. Service to the old numbers will be disconnected soon and I'd hate to be the person who gets the old BBS numbers -- let's try to minimize the number of modem calls going to the old number and waking up some unsuspecting soul.

Of course, the BBS is still accessible through all the same Internet addresses: telnet://bbs.os2bbs.com (to access the BBS) and http://www.os2bbs.com (through the web)

OS/2 Essentials Version 2 Available.

Canton MI - Stardock Systems, Inc. A leading independent OS/2 software vendor announced that OS/2 Essentials Version 2 is generally available today. The utility suite comes with Stardock's essential utilities as well as a host of shareware, freeware, demo software, and fixpacks. The utilities include SDS Screen Saver Pro, a powerful screen saver that uses Ssaver screen modules, Deskpic screen modules, supports green monitors, and has built in security. This is easily the most feature rich screen saver available for OS/2. Moreover, unlike OS/2's built in "lock-up" feature, Screen Saver Pro does not reset thread priorities which cause system performance to suffer. Screen Saver Pro 2.0 now offers multimedia extensions and more screen saver modules than 1.1 did. Another popular utility is DirMaster Pro which is a powerful file manager that has excellent performance and is very customizable.

New to OS/2 Essentials Version 2 is SDS Benchmark. While other benchmarks are available for OS/2, SDS Benchmark is very easy to use -- a single click to begin benchmarking all of a PC's hardware subsystems. Users who want to submit the results of benchmarking their system for system comparisons can email benchmark@stardock.com.

One of the most unique and useful utilities included is SDS FileGraph/PM which graphically displays in bar-chart format where disk space is used. This feature alone has made OS/2 Essentials a favorite with IS Managers and power users. Another heavily updated feature of verison 2 is the WPS Trashcan. With the trashcan installed, users have a robust and easy to use undelete feature that works in an object-oriented fashion.

As if these features alone don't justify the $49.95 price, Stardock has taken advantage of room given by distributing it on a CD-ROM. Also included on the CD are a host of un-registered shareware ranging from PMMail to PMView. "We felt that the shareware community, which has always been a major force in the OS/2 market, kind of got left out of OS/2 Warp 4's demo CD." said Brad Wardell, President, Stardock Systems, Inc. "Shareware authors that are interested in getting their programs onto future versions of OS/2 Essentials can submit them to us for evaluation giving them a new marketing channel that did not exist before."

Numerous fixpacks to OS/2 itself along with Visual Age and third party programs also come on the CD. OS/2 Essentials requires OS/2 Warp 3 or later (OS/2 Warp 3 users will need to obtain a special installation kit from Stardock's website or via your local Stardock sales representative).

OS/2 Essentials Version 2 is $49.95 or $19.95 if you already have OS/2 Essentials 1.x. You can purchase the full version from virtually any place that carries OS/2 software.

Stardock can be reached at (313) 762-0687 (313) 762-0690 fax or via web at http://www.stardock.com.
