From The Editor
The staff of the OS/2 eZine offer our prayers and our heartfelt condolences to the many people who have lost
friends and family in the terrorist attacks in the United States this month. It is our sincerest wish that everyone
throughout the world can one day live in peace and happiness.
Forums
You may have noticed that the forums for last month disappeared and that the OS/2 eZine reverted to the
July issue for a short time. Everything is back up and running now. The folks at BMT Micro did a major upgrade on the
server hosting the OS/2 eZine this month and unfortunately some of the eZine files got lost in the process. The good
part of this is that they've added some new facilities to the server, so I'll be having a look at perhaps taking advantage
of those in the coming months.
An Interesting LVM Feature
I ran across a posting on the internet this month that described a feature of LVM that I wasn't aware of. Previously
I thought that only JFS could take advantage of using multiple partitions in a single volume or drive letter. It turns out
that if you use LVM to create a volume that uses more than one partition you can in fact format it using any format
you like, HPFS, FAT, whatever you like. The feature that JFS adds is the ability to dynamically add partitions to an
LVM volume without reformatting. If you format such a volume with any other file system and want to add a partition
to it, you will have to backup, reformat and restore the data to do that. Thanks to David T. Johnson for the heads-up.
Webmail/2 Version 8.0
If you're a mail and web server administrator or you just need to reach your email from any web browser, you need to
get familiar with Webmail/2. Version 8 has just
been released. I installed version 6 earlier this summer and used
it extensively to read my email from whatever computer I could come across while I was away. WebMail/2 is a web
to email gateway which allows you to use your web browser as a full-featured e-mail client. This is an
amazing free product that is well worth a look.
eComStation News
There are a number of nice
screenshots of the eCS desktop
now at the
eComStation
website. If you have a nice eCS desktop, feel free to send them a snapshot to post on their site. Note to the eCS web designer: it sure would be
nice if the screenshots didn't open a new browser window to display.

This Issue
With summer wrapping up, things were pretty quiet here at the eZine this month.
Andrei Porodko is back again to talk about NetDrive for OS/2, Rob Basler gives Opera a spin, John Bijnens looks
at DirDiff, Doug Clark is back with another installment of his series on ODBC and Simon Gronlund anchors the
issue with his Into Java column.
Please Support the OS/2 eZine
Thanks to our sponsor Sundial Systems last month, Andrei Porodko got a copy of
JunkSpy 2.0 and Simon Gronlund got a t-shirt from the Southern California OS/2 Users Group.
Please support the eZine by clicking through and examining our sponsors products. It really does help, and you never know, you
might find something you really need.

How about writing it? The OS/2 eZine has to be a community effort, the more writers we have to spread the

would find interesting, we're looking for one-off articles as well as short series and monthly columns to fill the
pages of the OS/2 eZine. Trying some cool new software? How about writing a short review? It doesn't
take much time and you can win some great prizes!
